Funding Assistance Programs

Hockey is a great opportunity for kids to be physically active and develop life-long friendships. We understand it can also be a costly sport to participate in and for some families a little assistance may be needed. For families in need of funding assistance, below are a few resources we encourage you to explore:

Shirley Pickering Memorial Fund

Shirley Pickering completed much in her lifetime and has left behind a legacy of community spirit and support. Shirley was never one to be in the spotlight, however, she impacted so many people, through her generosity, caring manner, love for her family & friends, healthy competitive spirit, spunk, hearty laughter, and loving hugs. Her giving heart completed all of who she was and what she represented.

Shirley moved to Sylvan Lake in 1942 and resided in Sylvan Lake until her passing in 2015, making her the longest continuous citizen, spending 73 years in Sylvan Lake. She lived within a few blocks of the arena.

Shirley had two sons, who she followed all over the province for minor hockey. Not only did she go to watch her boys, but also to watch their friends. She continued this, by watching her grandkids and was the proudest hockey mom and gramma.

The focus of the ShirleyPickering Memorial Fund is to support players within Sylvan Lake Minor Hockey Association, in the participation of physical activity as well as acknowledging stewardship in their communities, contributing to the legacy of Shirley and continue sharing the memory of her love for the game of hockey and the children playing it.

Each year the SPMF may provide funding assistance to a select few SLMHA Members, for one of the following:

  • Registration of a child to participate in Sylvan Lake Minor Hockey
